Made from natural heather stems
Heathergem jewellery is painstakingly handmade from the gnarled-like stems of heather - a visually striking common Scottish plant renowned for its rich purple bloom. .
Heather Gems have been created for more than 20 years in the picturesque town of Pitlochry right in the heart of the stunningly scenic Central Highlands of Scotland . .
The location is ideal as the surrounding hills provide an excellent source of our raw material..
The heather used is much too mature to provide any nutrition for wildlife and is pulled in an environmentally-friendly manner which helps promotes the growth of new heather. The stems are dried, shotblasted to remove the bark, and dyed various colours using natural dyes..
Stems of different colours are then mixed and compressed into a block - and 80 tons of pressure is required to compress the block of stems.. The block is then sliced and individual pieces are cut, shaped, honed and filled by highly skilled craft workers before being lacquered to give the distinctive final finish..
Hjaltasteyn (an abbreviation of old Norse for Shetland Stone) was started in 1968 and, in it’s infancy, polished Shetland stones. Local artist Rosalyn Thompson, who was born on the island, acquired the business in 1991 and is inspired by Shetland’s rich history, which includes the Picts, Vikings, and Celts, to create her wonderful designs. Using traditional methods Rosalyn makes jewellery that is both delicate and beautiful and as each piece is handmade no two pieces will be exactly the same, offering the wearer something quite unique.

With a passion for her island environment Sheila creates her original designs reflecting nature’s wonderful sea, sky and landscape colours. Orkney’s history and folklore are also a rich medium for her inspiration.
She feels her designs take on an energy while in the research and development process. Developing designs which are a meaningful expression of her chosen subject is very important to her eventual creation.
Following her graduation from Edinburgh College of Art she worked 26 years as a designer in the trade before setting up on her own in 1993.
Throughout her career she has won many design awards in both Britain and Europe . However Sheila feels the challenge is always in what lies ahead and with lots of new ideas ready to develop she will continue to build on her range of jewellery designs.

Sheila’s designs are recognised as having a unique collectable Northern style, perhaps even Scandinavian in influence as the Orkney Islands were once linked historically and geographically. Orcadians have a strong independent feeling of their island identity.
Each design carries Sheila’s origination makers punch mark, SD (Sheila Dearness being her maiden name). All pieces of jewellery that are required to have a hallmark are independently marked for fineness and are assayed at Edinburgh Assay Office.
In her country workshop a small vibrant team work hard to produce Orkney’s premier jewellery. Each piece of jewellery comes boxed with design origination card.
Shetland Jewellery operates from a small factory in the Shetland Islands which lie about 100 miles off the Northern coast of Scotland.
The workshop is set beside a sea loch which abounds in wildlife especially during the summer months. Arctic terns and other seabirds hover just outside and wild otters are often seen from our windows.
Shetland Jewellery was founded by Jack Rae in 1953, and now employs about 12 craftsmen and women all of whom have been trained in the art of jewellery manufacture.
Each piece is made from start to finish by the same worker ensuring quality and job satisfaction.
The jewellery they produce includes a range of Celtic designs as well as designs inspired by the “Glasgow Girls” who were a group of women artists that played a major part in the development of the “Glasgow Style” around the turn of the twentieth century.
